Interventions You'll Enjoy As Part Of Your Individualized Treatment At Ultimate Therapy:

Vestibular Rehabilitation

The vestibular system creates a sense of balance and spatial orientation needed for coordinating movement with balance. Dizziness, nausea, and imbalance are common obstacles following a concussion. Fortunately, these symptoms are usually not permanent and can be treated through vestibular physical therapy.

Hand-Eye Coordination Activities

The eyes are controlled by the brain, so when someone experiences an injury to the brain, such as a concussion, the visual system can be affected thus affecting hand-eye coordination. At Ultimate Therapy, we will create the perfect challenge so you can re-gain coordination skills.

Oculomotor Reflexes and Tracking

Impairments in the ocular system that are often associated with concussions may include vision issues, brain fog, dizziness and visual instability. Our Physical Therapists will provide you with exercises specifically designed to re-train your oculomotor reflexes and tracking.

Sport Specific Exercises

Our therapists at Ultimate Therapy want to make sure you are well prepared and equipped for SAFE return to your sport following recovery from a concussion.  Our Physical Therapists use a whole body approach to fine-tune your movement patterns and re-gain strength.

Balance and Proprioception Training

Concussions often negatively affect balance and proprioception or body position. If left unaddressed, these deficits may leave individuals vulnerable to additional concussive and non-concussive injuries.

Posture and Body Mechanics

Creating habits that promote proper posture and body mechanics, which is  the correct use of muscles to move or lift objects, can reduce lingering symptoms of a concussion and reduce the risk of reoccurrence.

Choose Ultimate Therapy for your Concussion Recovery.

FAQ's

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • Are special tests needed before seeing a Physical Therapist for concussion?

Following a head injury it is typical that individuals seek emergancy or urgent care. This is often the first time that they are given a concussion diagnosis. Other times people will self refer to Physical Therapy without seeing a medical doctor for other concerns such as neck pain following a fall or motor vehicle accident. It is not unusual to find evidence of a concussion that can be treated without medical consult. Medical consult is advised once a concussion is suspected.

  • How long does it take to recover from a concussion?

Recovery time frame for a concussion will vary depending upon the severity and complexity of the injury. Recovery can be anywhere from a few days to lingering symptoms that never fully resolve.

  • How can physical therapy improve concussion symptoms?

Physical Therapists will guide you through an individualized recovery program including vestibular and occulomotor training, balance and proprioception activities and hands on treatment. Additionally, your therapist will provide you with education and resources for managing your condition moving forward.

  • Does insurance cover treatment for concussion rehabilitation?

Insurance covers physical therapy treatment for concussion rehabilitation. Always contact your insurance company to verify benefits.

  • Do I need a doctor's order to come to therapy?

In the state of Maryland we are an open access state, meaning you are able to see a Physical Therapist without a doctor's order. Many insurances including Medicare do not require a doctor’s order as well. When we verify your benefits we will know if you need one or not. You can also call the number on the back of your card for clarification.
