FAQ's

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a treatment option for tight muscles and painful trigger points.  A new, single use, thin, solid needle is insterted through the skin and into the muscle.  This may produce a muscle twitch.  Eletrical stimulation is applied to the needle to ease treatment soreness and improve muscle recruitment.  It is called "dry" needling becuase  medication isn't  injected into the muscle.

  • What are trigger points?

When muscles are strained, overused or shortened for long periods of time, muscles can develop knotted areas called myofascial trigger points.  The tight muscles cause a reduction in blood flow and nutrients.   The connective tissue and nerves around the trigger point become sensitive, sore and painful.

  • Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?

Dry needling is not acupuncture.  Acupuncture is provided by practioners who are trained in tradtional Chinese medicine.  Acupuncture addresses the flow of energy along meridian pathways.  Dry needling is conducted by  physical therapists who treats pain and dysfunction based on the muscular system.

  • Who can benefit from dry needling?

Dry needling is an effective treatment for muscular neck, shoulder, elbow, low back, hip, knee and ankle pain.  The dry needling specialist will take a detailed history and assessment  to determine if dry needling is a safe treatment  option.

  • Is dry needling uncomfortable?

Dry needling uses very small needles that are typically not painful.  The muscle can twitch when the needle is inserted. This is a positive sign, as it identifies the  painful trigger point.  There can be local soreness for 1-2 days after dry needling treatment, but this is usually  mild.   The physical therapist will discuss the patient's  potential risks and benefits prior to treatment.

  • How long does dry needling help?

Dry needling can relax tight bands of muscles for hours or days dependent on the patient.  This gives us a window of opportunity to stretch, strengthen or provide manual therapy to make long term  improvements.

  • How does it work?

By inserting the needle into the tight band of muscle, it will cause the muscle to relax and lengthen. This allows for improved blood flow and removal of local pain chemicals.

  • How often should I be treated?

Some patients get immediate relief with dry needling. For patients with longer lasting conditions, it may take several treatments to see an effect.  We recommend scheduling two times a week.  One session  is designated for dry needling.  On alternate treatment days, we emphasize

manual therapy and corrective exercises to assist with recovery.
